NAHJ NYC is pleased to announce its first event of 2019: Covering the White House with CBS News Political Correspondent Ed O’Keefe and CBS News White House Producer Fin Gomez. The event will take place from 6:15 – 8 pm on Monday, January 7 at the CBS Broadcast Center in New York, beginning with networking and light bites followed by a discussion and Q&A with O’Keefe and Gomez. Ed O’Keefe is a CBS News political correspondent based in Washington, D.C., reporting for all CBS News broadcasts and platforms. O’Keefe has reported on congressional and presidential politics for The Washington Post since 2008. He joined CBS News as a contributor in 2017. Since 2008 O’Keefe has covered or contributed reporting on the presidential campaigns of Jeb Bush, Hillary Clinton, John McCain, Barack Obama, Mitt Romney, Marco Rubio and Donald Trump, as well as dozens of key House and Senate races. On Capitol Hill, he has reported extensively on debates over gun control, immigration policy, health-care reform and federal spending. He covered the “fiscal cliff” showdown of late 2012; the 2013 government shutdown and recent shutdowns; the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch; and dozens of contentious congressional hearings, including former FBI Director James Comey’s dramatic testimony last year. Over the course of nearly 13 years at The Washington Post, O’Keefe has covered federal agencies, federal employees and a range of policy issues, from the repeal of the Pentagon’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy to the decline of the U.S. Postal Service and cases of questionable government spending. He also briefly covered the war in Iraq. O’Keefe is a member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. He is a graduate of American University and was born and raised in Delmar, N.Y.
In September, Fin Gomez joined CBS News as a producer in the White House unit after 12 years at Fox News Channel. As a CBS News White House producer, Gomez has helped break and confirm stories for the CBS network and other CBS platforms on the White House beat. He has traveled extensively through the United States to cover President Trump, including traveling from DC to Florida to Missouri to cover 2 Trump rallies in two days. He works closely with some of the best journalists assigned to White House beat, including Chief Washington Correspondent Major Garrett and White House Correspondent Weijia Jiang. Over his years at Fox News, Gomez covered 3 presidential campaign cycles from the campaign trail and breaking news from around the world. Most recently, Gomez was the lead producer for Fox News’ chief White House correspondent John Roberts and traveled on multiple presidential foreign trips including the Singapore summit with President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. He was assigned to cover Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign not only for the cable news network but also as special campaign correspondent for Fox News Latino, writing stories about Latino issues. From 2009-2015, Gomez worked out of the network’s Miami bureau as a producer, covering domestic news and extensive Latin America news including the drug war in Mexico, the economic crisis in Venezuela and crime in Brazil. CBS News vice president and Washington bureau chief Chris Isham told TVNewser the following after Gomez joined CBS: “Fin comes to us with a wealth of experience. He has covered a wide range of stories, from the campaign trail to overseas coverage, and will no doubt be an asset to our D.C.-based team.” Gomez has been a member of NAHJ since 2007.
